Kids are our future—and they can be the future for your brand, too.

If you have products that appeal to children, there is no better way to market them to your target audience than partnering with creators your customers (and their parents) can relate to. And let’s be honest, a lot of “kids these days” speak a language many people working in a marketing department don’t even understand. But you won’t have to worry about that with the right strategy in place.

In this blog, we’ll get into the most effective content for kids influencers, some tips to keep in mind before partnering with them, and examples of some pint-sized powerhouses making waves on social media right now.

The most effective content types for kid influencers

Tutorials

Have a product that takes a bit of know-how before getting comfortable with it? Let your kid influencer break it down for their audience. They’ll know how to explain how it works in a language your audience understands and give them the confidence they need to do it for themselves.

Unboxing and product reviews

Unboxings and product reviews are probably the most popular content types for kid influencers. If you have a new product, have your influencers unbox it on camera and capture their genuine reactions and first impressions.

Challenges

If there is a challenge blowing up on IG or TikTok, there’s a high chance a kid created it. Encourage your creators to cook up challenges around one of your products. If it picks up steam, you’ll have more user-generated content rolling in than you know what to do with.

Q&As

Audience engagement is essential for any influencers and kids are no exception. Have your creators engage with their fans occasionally in real-time. Just make sure to keep an eye on the comment section to make sure everyone is behaving themselves.

Positive messages

Kids are extremely impressionable. Make sure your influencers exude positivity and are a good influence for their fans so everything stays harmonious and free of controversy. The parents will appreciate it, too.

Tips for partnering with kid influencers

Brush up on relevant laws and regulations.

Don’t jump into a partnership with a kid influencer without first understanding relevant laws in your area. Here are just a few regulations to keep in mind before making anything official. Here’s a little rundown of some of the U.S. laws you should be familiar with before diving in:

  • Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule (COPPA) – There is a good chance any kids on your creator roster have fans 13 or younger. If so, take some time to brush up on the COPPA guidelines.
  • Child labor laws – Some states have different laws than others, so check out which one’s apply where you’re based. One thing to note: You might not have to worry about some of them if your creator technically works for their parents.
  • Truth in advertising – “An ad must be truthful, not misleading, and, when appropriate, backed by scientific evidence,” according to the truth in advertising laws. Make sure any of your more inexperienced creators understand this before they start promoting any products.

Get the parents involved.

Nearly all kid influencers will have some sort of parental involvement behind the scenes. But that doesn’t mean you should faze them out of the content if they have an aligned on-camera presence. A parent-child influencer relationship can make campaigns relatable for viewers of all ages.

Encourage authenticity and transparency.

Some kids might feel like everything they post has to be perfect. It doesn’t. In fact, showing bloopers and goofs can make the content far more entertaining and show the creator’s fans that they don’t always have to be perfect either.

Mix in some educational content.

Having fun is a priority, but it doesn’t hurt for your creator’s audience to learn a thing or two along the way. Plus, the parents will be much more inclined to support their kids following your creators if there is an educational element to their content.

Make sure the content and products are age-appropriate.

Hopefully this goes without saying, but make sure your product is appropriate and enjoyable for kids before asking a kid influencer to promote it. If you’re questioning that at all, you’ll be better off just working with an older creator.

Balance branded and non-branded content.

Your audience will be able to tell if your kid influencer is just out there hawking products. Make sure they have plenty of their own organic content mixed in between branded posts.

Establish clear boundaries.

At the end of the day, you have to let your kids be kids. Give them some attainable goals, but don’t work them to the point where creating content stops being fun.
